A sump pump is typically a small fractional horsepower pump used to pump below grade groundwater. They are often used in homes with basements which have an elevation too low to use a gravity drain line. The pumps are often located in a basin below the concrete floor. They are generally used for the collection and discharge of groundwater from around the perimeter of the foundation as well as from below the concrete floor.
Purpose for a Sump Pump
Your homes exterior foundation drain lines are typically routed to your sump pump. During wet weather events the sump pump is intended to help keep hydro-static pressure from building up around your foundation walls. Although we are pump experts, whenever possible we try to eliminate sump pumps by day-lighting your foundation drains away from the house. However, this is not always possible due to the elevations of the surrounding terrain.
Sump pumps are often the most neglected pump in regards to the care exercised in choosing the proper pump for any given application. Unfortunately, many plumbers and other installers are not aware of the many factors that need to be considered for long term functionality of your sump pump. Additionally, the only pumps readily available for most installers are only residential duty pumps.
